Elle s'est faite au profit des palmiers variété «deglet nour», et sous trois formes : la réhabilitation des vieilles oasis, les périmètres publics, la mise en valeur privée. Mais, coincée entre exigences de rentabilité et caractère limité des ressources en eau, cette agriculture doit aujourd'hui affiner ses méthodes pour mieux valoriser cette ressource rare.
In 20 years, irrigation in Southern Tunisia has multiplied by 2.5 percent, progressing faster than any other part of the country. It has been particularly applied to the «deglet nour» variety of date palm, and that has brought major benefits through the rehabilitation of old oases and public perimeters, as well as the involvement of private development schemes. Wedged among the demands of output and the limited character of water resources, this agriculture must refine its methods to better use this rare resource.
