The aim of this paper is to organize for the first time an uncertain issue, which we definitely assign to the territory of Carthago Nova. The obverse depicts an aspergillum and the reverse a securis. The issue can be dated between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD. In addition, unpublished coin finds confirm the suggested location. On the other hand, the nature of these bronze pieces is discussed. It seems more correct to interpret them as tesserae rather than as Carthago Nova’s quadrantes. The most convincing fact, although not definitive, is the absence of a magistrate in charge of the issue or even of the name of the colony itself, as in the form of an abbreviation – C(olonia) V(rbs) I(ulia) N(ova Carthago)– in the anonymous issue with Minerva and statue on a pedestal (RPC I 151).
El objetivo de este artículo es ordenar por primera vez un material numismático incierto, el cual asignamos definitivamente al territorio de Carthago Nova. El anverso es descrito con aspergillum (aspersorio o hisopo) y el reverso con securis (segur o hacha). La cronología propuesta se encuentra entre finales del siglo I a. C. y principios del I d. C. Además, los hallazgos inéditos que se incorporan permiten ratificar la localización propuesta. Por otro lado, la naturaleza numismática de nuestras piezas de bronce es debatida, concluyéndose que es más correcto identificarlas como téseras y no como nuevos cuadrantes de Carthago Nova. El dato más convincente, aunque no definitivo, es la ausencia de un magistrado a cargo de la emisión o, incluso, el propio nombre de la colonia, como sucede en forma de abreviatura – C(olonia) V(rbs) I(ulia) N(ova Carthago)– en la serie anónima con Minerva y estatua sobre pedestal (RPC I 151).
