Description:
Courmelles (Département Aisne) liegt in den Lössschichten im östlichen Teil der großen eurasischen Platte. Es zeichnet sich durch seine paläolithische Station in Plateaulage aus. Die Fundschicht aus dem jüngeren Mittelpaläolithikum wurde innerhalb der Ablagerungen der beginnenden letzten Eiszeit (Weichself ruhglazial) identifiziert. Die Steinartefakte aus Quarzit-Sandstein wurden im oberen Teil eines ausgewaschenen, grauen Waldbodens gefunden, was die paläolithische Station in das Isotopenstadium 5a, d.h. zwischen 85 und 75 Ka BP ansetzt. Von dem Levallois-Abschlagmaterial zeugen einige Grundformen und zwei Levallois-Spitzen. Dennoch ist das Fundmaterial nicht repràsentativ genug, um den Fundplatz technologisch einzuordnen. Die paläolithische Besiedlung von Courmelles trägt zum Verständnis der Fundstätten des Weichselfruhglazials bei und stellt ein erstes Bezugssystem in der Ausarbeitung einer chronostratigraphischen Sequenz im Departement Aisne dar.
Located in the eastern part of the great Eurasian loess belt, the deposits found at Courmelles (Aisne) are unusual in that they attest a Palaeolithic occupation on a plateau site. The archaeological level dating from the recent stage of the Middle Palaeolithic has been identified in the context of deposits dating from the beginning of the last glaciation (Early Weichselian). The lithic assemblage of sandstone-quartzite appears in the upper level of a horizon consisting of bleached grey forest ground, which suggests that the Palaeolithic occupation may be dated to the 5a isotopic stage, i.e. between 85 000 and 75 000 B.P. The Levallois technique is attested by a number of flakes and by two points. However the lithic series is not significant enough to allow the technological orientation of the site to be identified. The Palaeolithic occupation at Courmelles contributes to the understanding of the early glacial Weichselian sites, and constitutes a preliminary frame of reference for the elaboration of a chrono-stratigraphic sequence in the département of the Aisne.
Situé à l'est de la grande zone lœssique eurasiatique, le gisement de Courmelles (Aisne) se singularise par son occupation paléolithique en position de plateau. Le niveau archéologique de la phase récente du Paléolithique moyen a été identifié au sein des dépôts du début de la dernière glaciation (Weichselien ancien). L'assemblage lithique en grès-quartzite est contenu dans la partie supérieure d'un horizon de sol gris forestier blanchi, ce qui placerait l'occupation paléolithique dans le stade isotopique 5a, soit entre 85 et 75 Ka BP. Le débitage Levallois est attesté par quelques produits de débitage et par la présence de deux pointes Levallois. Néanmoins, la série lithique est trop peu représentative pour définir l'orientation technologique du site. L'occupation paléolithique de Courmelles apporte sa contribution à la compréhension des sites du Début Glaciaire weichselien et constitue un premier référentiel dans l'élaboration d'une séquence chronostratigraphique dans le département de l'Aisne.
