Elle permet de légitimer, outre leur pouvoir, les bouleversements socio-économiques des Highlands, la constitution de 1689, la réconciliation hanovrio-jacobite et l’expansion impériale.
Outlawed in 1747 after the failure of the Jacobite rising, the «Highland garb» was all the craze a century later. Duly sanitized, enhanced by a background of invented traditions, it was appropriated by the Victorian elites, busy legitimizing, over and above their own vested interests, the Highland Clearances, the constitutional settlement of 1689, the Hanoverian succession and British imperial expansion.
