Alexander I van Luik en Rudolf van Sint-Truiden : een gelegenheidsalliantie ? Toen Rudolf, abt van Sint-Truiden (1108-1138) in 1121 gedwongen was om zijn abdij te verlaten na zich te hebben verzet tegen de ambities van de toekomstige prinsbisschop van Luik, Alexander I (1128-1135), vertrokken beide mannen tijdens de jaarwisseling van 1128-1129 ijlings naar Rome om er paus Honorius II te ontmoeten. De Gesta abbatum Trudonensium hebben dit kleurrijke relaas bewaard van de risicovolle omstandigheden waarin zij in volle winter de Grote Sint-Bernhardpas overstaken. Het document, dat het verhaal vertelt van de evoluerende persoonlijke band tussen de bisschop van Luik, Alexander I en abt Rudolf van Sint-Truiden, komt vertrekkende van deze anekdote, terug op de omstandigheden rond deze verbazingwekkende en onwaarschijnlijke toenadering. Het poogt het bewijs te leveren dat de motivatie van Rudolf van Sint-Truiden om zijn voormalige vijand naar Italië te vergezellen eerder politiek dan spiritueel was.
Alors qu’en 1121, l’abbé Raoul de Saint-Trond (1108-1138) avait dû quitter son monastère après s’être levé contre les prétentions du futur prince-évêque de Liège, Alexandre Ier (1128-1135), ces deux hommes partirent précipitamment à Rome au tournant de l’année 1128-1129 afin de rencontrer le pape Honorius II. Les Gesta abbatum Trudonensium conservent le récit haut en couleur des circonstances périlleuses dans lesquelles ils franchirent ensemble le col du Grand-Saint-Bernard en plein hiver. Au départ de cette anecdote, cet article, consacré à l’évolution des relations personnelles entre l’évêque de Liège Alexandre Ier et l’abbé Raoul de Saint-Trond, revient sur les circonstances de l’étonnant rapprochement de ces deux personnalités que tout semblait, de prime abord, opposer. Il tend à démontrer que les motivations de Raoul de Saint-Trond à accompagner en Italie son ancien ennemi furent davantage politiques que spirituelles.
Alexandre I of Liège and Rudolf of Sint-Truiden : an Alliance of Circumstance ? While Rudolf, the abbot of Sint-Truiden (1108-1138) was forced to abandon his monastery in 1121 after having opposed the claim to power of the future princebishop of Liège, Alexandre I (1128-1135), both men hastily set out for Rome on the eve of 1129, in order to meet Pope Honorius the Second. The Gesta abbatum Trudonensium have preserved this colorful account of the perilous circumstances under which they crossed the Great St. Bernard Pass together in full winter. Starting from this particular anecdote, the document, which recounts the evolving personal relationship between the bishop of Liège, Alexandre I and abbot Rudolf of Sint-Truiden, returns to the circumstances surrounding this surprising rapprochement, which came to pass against all expectations. It seeks to demonstrate that Rudolf of Sint-Truiden’s motivations to accompany his former enemy to Italy were political rather than spiritual.
