The ways of rural emigrations : the example of a village in Southwestern France. Cardaillac is a small depopulated agricultural village, about six miles from Figeac (Lot). From 1934 to 1974, 253 pupils passed through the local primary school ; 206 of them can be considered as economically active ; 43 only remain in Cardaillac ; all the others have left, most of them being nowadays in Figeac or in Paris and its suburbs. The author points to the fact that there is a close relation between the results achieved at school and the present professional status of these migrants : the best primary school ptipils are to be found in the various branches of the Civil service or the Army ; most of the others are manual workers. There is also a strong influence of those individuals who where born in the region and are now in a position where they can help the newcomers to find job opportunities.
