La Dombes est une zone humide du département de l'Ain. Les étangs, créés par l'homme, y sont exploités selon un assolement faisant succéder élevage du poisson et culture de céréales. Ils déterminent des conditions naturelles tout à fait favorables à l'activité cynégétique. Les structures foncières en place en ont fait une chasse citadine et privée, caractères renforcés par la pratique de plus en plus répandue de la location. Toutefois le droit d'affût donne aux habitants la possibilité de chasser le canard. L'agriculture, devenue très dynamique, fait très peu de concessions à la chasse mais rares sont les fermiers qui exercent leur droit de chasser. Un intérêt croissant est apporté à la pisciculture mais l'exploitation des étangs, très variable en fonction du faire-valoir, ne perturbe pas gravement l'activité cynégétique. Agriculture, pisciculture et chasse ont trouvé un modus vivendi relativement satisfaisant en Dombes.
