The article contains a refutation of the reasons for Claval's scepticism as to the ability of marxist thinking to deal with geographical problems. The abstract nature of Marx's system is situated in the larger framework of the highly valuable logico-historical method. As regards the manifestations of marxist totalitorianism, it is shown that Stalinism is an outcome of societal conditions hampering the exploitation of the liberating aspects of marxism, and that the interpretation of geography as an ideological perception of reality is a rational argument.
Marx et les recherches sur l'espace. — Cet article réfute les raisons pour lesquelles Claval met en doute la capacité de la pensée marxiste à maîtriser les problèmes géographiques. Le caractère abstrait du système de Marx doit être apprécié dans le cadre plus large de la méthode logico-historique. En ce qui concerne les manifestations du caractère totalitaire du marxisme, on montre que le stalinisme résulte de conditions sociales qui s'opposent au développement des aspects libérateurs du marxisme, et que la géographie peut être interprétée comme perception idéologique de la réalité.
