L'histoire urbaine connaît en France, depuis quelques années, un net renouvellement : la ville cesse d'être le cadre neutre de l'étude pour en devenir l'objet spécifique. Dans ce renouvellement, la prise en compte de la dimension spatiale des phénomènes a joué un rôle important. Ce sont les caractères du discours historien sur l'espace urbain qu'on tente ici de préciser. Au-delà de différences certaines (l'espace urbain interne est d'abord appréhendé comme espace socioculturel, l'espace externe comme espace économique), les études analysées manifestent toutes une extrême sensibilité chronologique. Pour l'Histoire, l'espace ne peut évidemment se concevoir hors du temps.
Urban history and space. — Urban history is, in France since some years, somewhat renewed : the town is no more considered as the neutral frame for a study, but is becoming the specific subject. In this renewal, the consideration of the spatial dimensions of phenomena played an important part. We are trying, here, to specify the characteristics of the historian discourse. Beyond real differences (internal urban space is first perceived as a sociocultural space, external space as an economical one), the analysed studies show, all of them, an extreme chronological sensitiveness. For history, of course, the space cannot be conceived without time.
