Depuis une dizaine d'années, en France, les études et les enseignements de photo-interprétation en milieu urbain entretiennent nombre d'équivoques méthodologiques et cachent des confusions. On pourrait expliquer ainsi le fait que cette discipline n'a pas rendu toutes les promesses annoncées, et on peut se demander si cela n'a pas desservi les analyses de la morphologie urbaine. Il paraît utile de reprendre d'une façon critique la méthode de photo-interprétation des formes urbaines de notre vieux continent, en prévenant des risques et des abus possibles. Après un bilan sommaire des recherches et usages où se marquent les différences et dépendances entre la photo-analyse et la photo-interprétation, l'article insiste, d'une part sur une critique de l'analyse des « paysages » urbains où l'on doit remettre en cause la méthode par « zoning » et celle des « niveaux », d'autre part, sur les présupposés et systèmes d'idées fondant la photo-interprétation.
Photo -interpretation of urban forms. Observations on the use thereof. — During the last 12 years in France, studies in and teaching of photographic interpretation in the urban milieu have fostered a number of methqdo- logical uncertainties and have concealed certain confusions. This might explain the fact that this discipline has not lived up to its promises and one may question whether they have not been detrimental to the analyses of urban morphology. It seems useful to reconsider in a critical way the method of photographic interpretation of urban forms on our old continent in appraising the risks and possible abuses. After a summary assessment of research and usages where the differences and dependencies between photographic analysis and photographic interpretation are differentiated, the article deals with on the one hand a critique of the analysis or urban "landscapes" where the methods by zoning and "levels" are called into question and on the other hand it deals with the presuppositions and systems of ideas behind photographic interpretation.
