The concept of space in ancient Japanese cartography. — The conceptions of the ancient Japanese concerning space, prior to cartography, are examined through toponymy and terms designating orientations, and the connection is made between these conceptions and the characteristics which cartography will adopt later on. Then the paper describes the vision of the world and the conception of territory which emerge from cartography prior to 16th century, and changes which occur in Japanese notions of orientation are shown through the orientations of the Shoen maps. For the Edo period, colours, signs, orientations and urban planning scales are examined, and from this the cartographers' conception of space is arrived at. Then, based on the study of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's urban work in Kyoto, the characteristics of spatial organisation of castle-towns are described as they are exhibited in ancient maps.
Pour la période antérieure à la cartographie, on examine, à travers la toponymie et les termes désignant les orientations, les conceptions des anciens Japonais en matière d'espace, et l'on établit le rapport de ces conceptions avec les caractères que prendra plus tard la cartographie. On définit ensuite la vision du monde et la conception du territoire qui se dégagent de la cartographie antérieure au xvi** siècle, et l'on montre, à travers l'orientation des cartes des shôen, les changements survenus dans les notions d'orientation des Japonais. Pour l'époque d'Edo, on examine les couleurs, les signes, les orientations et les échelles des plans de ville, et, par là, la conception de l'espace des cartographes. Puis, à partir de l'étude de l'œuvre urbanistique de Toyotomi Hideyoshi à Kyoto, on définit les caractères de l'organisation de l'espace dans les villes-châteaux, tels que les manifestent les cartes anciennes.
