Archaeological study reconstructs the history of the cemetery as being that of an institution. During the first phase in the 9th-10'h centuries, an area of burial was succeeded by a regular cemetery arranged in rows in the foreground of a chapel, to be followed by a church cemetery towards the year 1000. In the second phase of the 11 th-13th centuries, the parish church was built in the cemetery at the end of the 11th century ; in the second half of the 12th century the cemetery and church were extended towards the east ; and to this were now added the functions of a central square of the new town and a marketplace as parts of a programme of urbanisation. In the third phase of the 14th-16th centuries, the competition between institutions brought about a contraction of the cemetery on the site in favour of the Halle des Marchands, and later its abandonment to create the square of the Hôtel de Ville.
L'étude archéologique retrace l'histoire du cimetière comme étant celle d'une institution. Durant la première période des IXe-Xe siècles, à une aire d'inhumation succèdent une nécropole disposée en rangées devant une chapelle, puis un cimetière ecclésial vers l'an Mil. Dans la deuxième période des XIe-XIIIe siècles, le cimetière reçoit l'église paroissiale à la fin du XIe siècle ; dans la deuxième moitié du XIIe siècle, le cimetière et l'église sont agrandis vers l'est ; les fonctions de place centrale de la ville neuve et lieu de marché s'ajoutent alors dans le contexte d'un projet urbanistique. Pendant la troisième période des XIVe- XVIe siècles, la concurrence entre institutions entraînera la rétraction du cimetière sur la place en faveur de la Halle des Marchands, puis son abandon pour créer la place de l'Hôtel de Ville.
