How does a combination of events lead to the formation of a society and an area having their own characteristics ? The article attempts to reply to this question using the example of Salvador. The stages in the formation of the town, from the mid-sixteenth century to the contemporary era, are analysed taking into account important chronological breaks. For each period, the social actors are presented and their role in structuring the area analysed. The author thus attempts to link social issues and areal aspects over different periods of time (long and short periods....).
Comment une combinaison d'événements conduit-elle à la formation d'une société et d'un espace aux caractéristiques propres ? L'article tente de répondre à cette question à partir de l'exemple de Salvador. Les étapes de la formation de la ville, depuis le milieu du 16e siècle jusqu'à l'époque contemporaine, sont analysées en tenant compte des grandes ruptures chronologiques. Pour chaque période, les acteurs sociaux sont présentés et leur rôle dans la structuration de l'espace analysé. Le texte tente ainsi de faire le lien, dans différentes temporalités (le temps long, le temps court...) et à différentes échelles, entre les questions sociales et les aspects spatiaux.
