This summary which is a semantic reflection on the origin and polysemy of the term housing estate, whose urban aspect is relatively recent, also underlines the ambivalence of the term which in French denotes the act of dividing into plots (lotir) (which is often evaded in studies) and also the result of this operation. Housing estates which at time appear as a priviledged place of social consensus and at other times on the contrary as a place of conflicts, certainly play a major role in the constitution of a new type of urban configuration which is taking place at the present time.
