  • Beschreibung: Jan Steen is one of the most beloved painters of hte French Golden Age. He is known for his humorous depictions of everyday life: disorderly households, noisy inns, quack doctors tending lovesick girls, and parents who set a bad example for their children. But few people know that Steen also made history paintings, which depict scenes from the Bible, classical mythology or Roman history. These stories--full of excitement, passion and drama--allowed him to broaden his repertoire of motifs, while never losing sight of the comic potential of each story. Steen's history of paintings represent a sizeable part of his oeuvre, but they have always received much less attention than his scenes of everyday life. Why was this? Why was Steen attracted to history painting? Which subjects did he choose? And what make these paintings so special?--from back cover
