  • Beschreibung: Berridge Infants School has one open plan reception class and the other in a classroom. This programme focuses on a child from each class. Jade's day starts with maths, today outdoors, and goes on a shape hunt. Meanwhile, Shoaib has a whole class CVC words activity followed by a focus activity on the same theme. Jade spends the majority of the free flow play session in the role play. It's set in a pet shop. Jo models the role of a customer phoning the shop and placing an order. Jade is fascinated by writing dog in the shop notebook. She plays both customer and shop keeper. Shoaib spends time on the computer before joining the teaching assistant outside. Today, they are digging up carrots they have planted. He is fascinated when he digs them up and clearly surprised and motivated by his discovery. Jade consolidates her mathematical experience choosing to play with the shapes outside. This programme is analysed in the follow-up episode Reception 2

Sheila Sage, Primary Adviser with responsibility for Early Years in Worcestershire, is joined by Ged Cotton, an infant school headteacher from Hove and previously team leader for early years at QCA and Diane Rich, Early Years consultant and author. The special guest is Jo Moore, who heads the Foundation Stage at Berridge Infant School. The panel talk about teaching mathematics outside the classroom. Diane offers some tips on how to best use the outdoor environment. The panel look in detail at role play and analyse the experience through the eyes of Jade, aged 5. Diane and Ged suggest some ways the role play could be extended or improved. Finally, with reference to 5-year-old Shoaib's day, they reflect on how practitioners go about getting the balance right between teacher-led experiences, those that are child-initiated and how both can be planned
