Amnesia is the poetic, Greek word for forgetfulness and loss of memory. Amnesia is a condition suffered first and foremost by those who damage or lose their memory. The causes of memory loss can be many and complex: disease, accidents, and trauma may play a part. It may also be linked to repression, when the brain induces a temporary amnesia to keep out unwanted impulses for a period of repair and healing – at least for a while. We also talk of collective or global amnesia, the thief of our memories, when a whole society or parts of it more or less deliberately adopt forgetfulness as a way of erasing problematic or mentally challenging events in the past. New technology can also lead us to forget things that previous generations made a point of remembering; we store our photographs in vulnerable digital formats instead of the physical photo album. AMNESIA brings together 8 Scandinavian artists who offer their highly individual takes on the many-faceted condition of forgetfulness – in painting, video, photo, and sculpture.
