  • Beschreibung: This comprehensive atlas explains the genesis and evolution of impact craters on Earth and presents a wealth of radar images from the Italian COSMO-SkyMed satellites that were acquired at the same frequency, spatial resolution, operating mode, and illumination, allowing excellent comparison of different impact structures. Detailed attention is paid to the processes that have hidden or erased terrestrial impact craters, and the basic principles of remote sensing and of the COSMO-SkyMed system and radar instrument are clearly explained. The core section documents each of the exposed craters officially recognized as caused by meteoritic impact, presenting a table with the COSMO-SkyMed radar image and, when available, an optical satellite image and a photograph taken in situ. Accompanying short text reports the location, context, geographical coordinates, and other ancillary information. The atlas closes by considering the possible meteoritic origin of structures not yet officially classified as impact craters and the value of remote sensing techniques and in situ geological studies in revealing their origin
