The aim of the study was to find out wether there are associations between the own stigmatising attitudes of psychiatric in-patients, their internalised stigma and their identification with the group of the „mentally ill“. Furthermore we wanted to find out how these attitudes develope over the term of a stay in a psychiatric hospital. Therefore 70 patients of a psychiatric hospital in Northern Germany filled out questionnaires immediately after their admission to the ward or day hospital and after 4 weeks of stay. We hypothesized that the identification with the group of the „mentally ill“ rises over the term of he hospital stay according to the contact hypothesis, so that stigmatising attitudes towards the own group are diminished and patients are likely to stigmatize themselves less. In contrast to the hypothesis we found that the identification with the group and the internalised stigma were rather declining, whereas the own stigmatising attitudes where rather rising.
