Introduction: Interventions and postoperative bleeding are associated with considerable limitations in the head and neck area for ENT patients and are therefore in the current interest of research with regard to the detection of risk factors and the treatment of bleeding complications. In addition to routine laboratory diagnostics, the preoperative bleeding history has already been established. In this prospective study, the frequency of postoperative bleeding and the value of the standardized bleeding history are to be investigated. Methods: In a six-month study period of an ENT university clinic 1486 patients were examined in consideration of preoperative laboratory diagnostics and bleeding history. They were interviewed by post using a standardized questionnaire on pain, postoperative bleeding, length of stay and postoperative behavior. If the questionnaire was not returned, telephone contact was attempted up to four times. 583 patients were included in the study. Results: The postoperative bleeding rate (15.61%) depends on gender (14.93 vs. 16.67%), pain (10.19 vs. 31.91%) and surgical site (6.67-33.33%). A significant influence of patient age, pain intensity, preoperative laboratory parameters and postoperative behavior could not be determined. Discussion: The postoperative bleeding rate is subject to the status of a university hospital and the subjective perception of the patients. In case of a high negative predictive value, the bleeding history is a suitable tool to ...
