Introduction: Gallbladder cancer is the most common ma-lignant tumour of the biliary system with an extraordinarilypoor prognosis. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated forty-two patients with histologically proven gallbladder cancer. Patients and methods: Estimated survival rates were calcu-lated by the Kaplan–Meier method, and differences wereassessed using the logrank test. The GKR (combined regis-try of cancer) and demographic data were used to gaininformation on community cancer statistics. Results: In this study, patients with metastases showedpoorer survival rates. Furthermore, the survival was signif-icantly better in patients with R0 resections, smaller tumoursizes and without lymph node infiltration. T stage, M stageand R stage were independent prognostic parameters. Sex and age had no significant effect onsurvival. Also, wefound that patients with incidental gallbladder cancer andthose with cholecystolithiasis showed significantly bettersurvival rates. Demographic analyses of the study group confirmed a high coverage of our institution for incidentcases in our catchment area and no significant regionaldeviations from the expected incidence of gallbladdercancer. Conclusion: Despite differences in the incidence in differentgeographical areas, gallbladder cancer appears to be fairlynormally distributed in Western Pomerania, a predominantlyrural area of Northeastern Germany. Coverage of incidentcases in our catchment area was high. T stage, M stage andR stage ...
