    Background: International studies reveal that more than 50 % of medical students are suffering from symptoms of burnout early in medical school. Burnout may manifest as emotional exhaustion, cynicism and low personal accomplishment. It is seen as response to chronic emotional stressors. Burnout in medical students is associated with psychiatric comorbidities such as depression and substance abuse as well as suicidal ideation. Besides lower academic performance there are potential risks to students health, and patient care if burnout persists to residency. The objective of this study is to describe the prevalence and development of burnout in medical students and to investigate the influence of study motivation and type A personality as potential risk factors. Methods: A questionnaire including MBI-Student Survey, Bortner-Scale and questions about study motivation was repeatedly administered to a total of 238 medical students at one medical school. Longitudinal data could be raised for 51 students over the first 4 years of medical school. Descriptive statistics and a time-series cross-section analysis were conducted. Results: During the first 4 years of medical school students experience overall moderate burnout. Emotional exhaustion increases from first to third year significant, cynicism and low personal accomplishment intensify further.
