  • Beschreibung: In the stylized design of Niederle and Vesterlund (2007), subjects choose between a piece-rate and a tournament scheme after performing under both schemes. We examine whether the well-replicated gender difference in competitiveness elicited using this design may be influenced by the visceral responses induced by the tasks performed before making the choice. We show that the gender difference in competitiveness is partially explained by the arousal of sex hormones in Experiment 1 and is reduced by introducing a resting period in Experiment 2. Our results suggest that mitigating visceral influences is beneficial for gender equality
