Nobel Prize was awarded in 1963 to the work of Hodgkin and Huxley about the dynamics of the Na and K conductance in the squid giant neuron. The Hodgkin-Huxley Model (HHM) describes the electrical behavior of the neuronal membrane as an oscillatory dynamic system. HHM equations are described in this chapter and the topology of the state space this dynamic system is discussed. It is shown that spike generation correspond to specific state point trajectories between two stable surfaces S1 and S2 thought the unstable zone U. Addition of a slow K current and of a low and another high threshold Ca2 currents, adjust the HHM behavior to simulate mo the electrical behavior of the cortical celular membranes. It is shown that this adapted model nicely mimics the behavior of both the tonic and the burst spiking cortical cells. The structure of the cortical column facilitates the phase locking of both nearby and distant cortical cellular assemblies promoting the entrainment of the electrical activity of cellular assemblies widely spread in the cortex
