  • Beschreibung: In her speech at the 2016 Conservative Party Conference, Theresa May promised to make Britain, once again, 'a sovereign and independent country'. The goal is ambitious. By withdrawing from EU supranational integration, May expects the UK to regain the freedom traditionally enjoyed by nation states. From a purely legal perspective, that is possible. State sovereignty is after all an important foundation of international law. However, the reality is often different. Contemporary sovereignty is seldom of the traditional sort. It exists in different contexts and assumes different shapes. The UK's post-Brexit position is likely to reflect that. The article looks at sovereignty in the context of modern independence, of steadily growing interdependence and of various forms of EU integration. The essay ends by asking what it means for both a hard and soft Brexit
