Beschreibung:
This article deals with the legitimizing functions of historiography in the context of minorities policy in the former GDR. In dealing with the Sorbian minority, the socialist regime strived early on for interpretive sovereignty over collective memory and oblivion. Using the example of the four-volume “Geschichte der Sorben” (published between 1974 and 1979), this article illumes the research and publication conditions at the time, as well as the instruments and patterns used to exercise ideological control and censorship.
