Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which is characterized by plaque-like demyelination in both white and grey matter and diffuse neurodegeneration. A T cell-driven autoimmune response against CNS antigens is the initiating event in the MS pathogenesis, as demonstrated in the animal model of MS, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).
