  • Beschreibung: To investigate the causal effect of benchmarking information, we carried out a randomized controlled trial among 194 owners of food stalls at 17 Singapore hawker centres from September 2019 to December 2020. Both control and treatment owners were informed of their own performance. Additionally, treatment owners were informed of relative performance and best practices. Compared to control owners, treatment owners were more likely to exit if their relative performance was low and less likely otherwise. The treatment effects were more pronounced among those who were less informed about their ability. Benchmarking improved supply and financial management practices, both benchmarked and non-benchmarked. Supported by heterogeneity analyses, we interpret the results as due to benchmarking resolving owners’ uncertainty about their own ability in the presence of uncertain market-level factors common to all owners
