Inhibitorische GABAerge Interneurone sind mit ca. 15–20 % (Staiger et al. 2015b) den exzitatorischen Nervenzellen im Neokortex von Mäusen zahlenmäßig deutlich unterlegen. Lediglich etwa 12–17 % dieser GABAergen Neurone exprimieren das vasoaktive intestinale Polypeptid, kurz VIP, (Rudy et al. 2011; Pfeffer et al. 2013) und kommen mit rund 60 % vorwiegend in der Schicht 2/3 des Barrel-Kortex von WT-Mäusen vor (Prönneke et al. 2015).
