The film shows mating and egg-laying behaviour in the Brasilian toad Pipa carvalhoi. Receptive females can be recognized by their swollen cloaka and thickened dorsal epidermis. The eggs are laid while the pair performs a series of sommersaults; they fall on the female's back and stick to her epidermis. They are further pressed onto the female's back by the male's body and later by stroking movements of the male's feet. Some other movements can be observed which probably have a communicatory function for the coordination of male and female. After a number of hours the female's back is covered with eggs which start to become implanted in her epidermis. 2 to 3 weeks later the tadpoles are born. Immediately they take in air and then start their lives as filter feeders. Within a period of 6 to 8 weeks they grow to a size of 50 to 60 mm and then metamorphose to small froglets
