Although the majority of Brazilians supported Barack Obama in the latest presidential election, members of the Brazilian Sugar Cane Industry Association (or UNICA, the acronym in Portuguese) were thrilled by what his opponent said during the third presidential debate. Senator John McCain promised to eliminate tariffs on Brazilian ethanol, while also arguing that subsidies for the corn-based ethanol industry distort the market and contribute to inflation. Subsidies for corn-based ethanol production in the United States are currently acting as “life-support” to an inefficient industry. If free trade, perfect competition, lower gas prices and global warming are the criteria chosen to evaluate tariffs, the United States is definitely on the wrong track
