  • Beschreibung: The Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) introduced in India aimed at propelling the economy to a higher growth path and heralding socio-economic equality. In this transformed regime the State is to be a facilitator while the private players are to take up the expansionary effort. This requires the basic infrastructural services to be in place. This paper tries to trace the trends in infrastructural availability in India in the post-SAP era, both at the national and sub-national level. Considerable regional disparity in infrastructural facilities is observed which is widening in recent times. The state is gradually withdrawing from provisioning of public utilities & infrastructure leading to a shortage of such services. Availability of such services also affects volume of investment in various regions leading to lopsided investment scenario. This has serious implications for the policy regime itself. Causes of such problems and possible remedies are also outlined
