  • Beschreibung: This paper quantifies the local economic impact of 147 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) that were established in India between 2005 and 2013. Combining census data on the universe of Indian firms with georeferenced data on SEZs, we find that SEZ establishment increased manufacturing and service employment not only in SEZ-hosting municipalities, but also in surrounding regions up to 10 km from the SEZ and with little indication for spatial relocation. This additional non-agricultural employment was created to a significant extent by small firms with a low degree of formality and was paralleled by a decline in local agricultural employment. The latter suggests that the establishment of SEZs contributed to structural change. Female workers, on average, experienced weaker employment gains than men and we find no indication for systematic improvements in local public good provision. The overall SEZ-induced employment gains are remarkably similar across privately and publicly run zones and zones with different industry denomination
