  • Beschreibung: How does conflict affect workers’ employment outcomes? To this question, the current literature offers conflicting answers. While the dominant view is that overall rates of labour market participation and employment decline during conflict, the contrary view suggests instead that conflict leads only to a reallocation of labour between groups and sectors in the economy. To make progress on this question, I study the effect of the Boko Haram insurgency on employment outcomes in Northern Nigeria. Using georeferenced household panel survey and disaggregated conflict datasets, I exploit spatial and temporal variation in the intensity of the conflict to identify these effects. I find negative effects of the conflict on labour market participation and overall employment. These negative effects are more pronounced for self-employment than for waged employment activities. Negative effects are also stronger for men than women, and for working-age adults than underage minors. Finally, these individual-level employment impacts translate to reduction in household food and non-food consumption
