Scholarship is inevitably intertwined with fantasy and fancy. Specific recognition of the capacity of popular culture to influence the shape and form of scholarship is part of the acknowledgement that through scholarship we construct truth. Reflexive scholarship enables the unsettling of premises and assumptions that shape inherited truths. It allows analysis to evaluate their substance and to consider alternate readings.
