  • Beschreibung: This paper aims to assess whether obesity, as a chronic disease, can constitute an element of wage differentials in the labor market. The model used is a straightforward extension of the Jacob Mincer model, from 1974, and assumes that there are three main types of variables that can affect wages: demographic variables, occupational variables and health variables, which include the weight variables. The data comes from the Fourth National Health Survey (4thNHS) that was conducted, in Portugal, between February 2005 and January 2006. The results of this study show that currently there is no statistically significant effect of obesity on wages, both for males and females. Gender and schooling differences remain the main reason for wage differentials
