  • Beschreibung: The structure of supply chains has important implications for the propagation of shocks and the dispersion of welfare gains across space. Using transaction-level tax records, we study over four million firm-to-firm relationships of 57,500 formal private sector firms in Kenya. We find that the value-added generated by the formal private sector corresponds to 30% of Kenya's GDP, and that local market size correlates with informality at the regional level. In line with an elementary model of production networks (Bernard and Zi, 2022) and empirical findings in other contexts, we observe disassortative mixing by firms' in- and out-degree and a positive correlation between firm size and the number of inter-firm linkages and geographic scope of firm sales. The spatial mapping of domestic firm-to-firm transactions reveals that the spatial decay in trade is fully driven by both the number of firm-to-firm relationships and transactions falling as travel time increases
