After 1989 the Italian Left has radically changed its political agenda, after turning to the ‘Market Paradigm’ to interpret the functioning of capitalism. It repudiated ‘social capitalism’ – although it had greatly contributed to establish it in the decade 1950-1990 – and embraced the model of capitalism descending from the ‘Market Paradigm’ (‘sovereign capitalism’). This short book traces the intellectual origins and genesis of tthe Italian Left's extraordinary metamorphosis, focusing on the ‘use of economics’ to which it turned as the key to explain its technocratic turn, and finally its electoral and political decline
