  • Beschreibung: Mental accounting influences how individuals perceive gains and losses. This study examines the impact of segregated versus integrated accounts on financial distress, using the sudden energy price hike in the UK in 2021. I compare the financial distress levels of consumers who pay separate bills for gas and electricity (segregated accounts) versus those who pay a combined bill (integrated accounts). I find that consumers who are more likely to engage in segregating accounts expect less future financial distress, everything else constant, and that there are no differential increases in expected financial distress between the two groups after the price hike
