Supply chains continue to evolve with new configurations in response to the dynamic business environment. Supply chain disintermediation is viewed as a viable solution to reduce cost and improve efficiency, provided information asymmetry is reduced in credible ways. This paper employs a case study approach to discuss the future potential of supply chain disintermediation, drawing on the lessons of the application of blockchain technologies in the case study of beef exports from Australia to China. The case study is suggestive of the capacity of information symmetry based on decentralised ledgers to shorten supply chains and hasten the circulation of commodities and finance. Tangible benefits include increased margin retention and finance cost savings, which can be held by producers and shared with consumers and improved capital utilisation
