  • Beschreibung: In the last year, the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 11.1% in the United Kingdom (UK), reaching the highest value of the last 40 years. The cost of food suffered an annual increase of 16.2%, which has disproportionally affected fruit and vegetables and has led to food insecurity currently affecting a quarter of UK households with children. We developed a cost-economic model that investigates the long-term health consequences of dietary changes of the surge in food prices in the UK, focusing on ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke. Our model shows that dietary changes due to the price surge could resulting in a near-25% increase in the incidence of IHD and a 10% increase in the incidence of stroke over the next 20 years compared to current levels. This effectively cancels the progress achieved in the last two decades. This a timely analysis and supports the initiative by the UK Government to appoint a Champion for “Personalized Prevention” who should urgently explore policies to mitigate the detrimental effect of the price surge on the health of the UK population
