It was the purpose of this study to show the disparity in effort between the shoplifter in practice of the crime, and the retail security specialist’s efforts toward prevention and apprehension. In addition, a further objective was to dispel some of the myths surrounding the crime of shoplifting and its prevention. Finally, this study sought to make specific recommendations for the purpose of advising retail security personnel where their efforts may be continued, discontinued, or re-directed to combat more effectively the crime of shoplifting
