This article describes the final destination of sanitary effluents in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Vargem das Flores an important region located between the municipalities of Betim and Contagem/MG, which shelter several native specimens of flora and fauna, beyond to be an important source water supply to the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (RMBH). Data from the Demographic Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Minas Gerais Sanitation Company (COPASA), the Minas Gerais Water Management Institute (IGAM) and the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), were analyzed. Data crossing allowed to identify the APA regions that do not have an official sewage network and their correlation with the average monthly family income. The results showed a decrease that, sewage contamination was responsible for the descent in the Water Quality Index (IQA), between the years 2014 and 2015, in addition to the significant increase in the presence of Escherichia coli, an important indicator of fecal contamination in the water.
O presente artigo retrata a destinação final dos efluentes sanitários na Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) Vargem das Flores, importante região localizada entre os municípios de Betim e Contagem/MG, que abriga diversos exemplares nativos da flora e fauna, além de ser um manancial de abastecimento para a Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte (RMBH). Para isto foram analisados dados provenientes do Censo demográfico do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), da Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais (COPASA), do Instituto Mineiro de Gestão das Águas (IGAM) e do Sistema Nacional de Informação sobre Saneamento (SNIS). O cruzamento dos dados permitiu identificar as regiões da APA que não possuem rede oficial de esgoto e sua correlação com o rendimento financeiro médio mensal familiar. Os resultados encontrados evidenciaram que, a contaminação pelo esgoto foi responsável pela queda do Índice de Qualidade da Água (IQA), entre os anos de 2014 e 2015, além do significativo aumento da presença da bactéria Escherichia coli, importante indicativo de contaminação fecal na água.
