Ancient manuscript. Written in the style of a book printed in the eleventh year of the guangxu 光緒 reign period, i.e., 1885. Average handwriting. Binding and handwriting simple and crude. Red punctuation marks. Following several prefaces and notes to the use of the book, at the beginning of the main text the following information on the authorship is provided: 湖南 長沙 湘陰 莘農 韓杰 / 安徽 太平 繁昌 漢臣 劉瀛 同閱 / 直隸 天津 靜海 向之 武榮 / 順天 通州 秀峰 董玉山 同編; 17.2 × 12.0. Cover: This manuscript finds itself in a self-made traditional-style book case prepared from cardboard and pasted with black cloth. The cover is of tough paper made from bast fiber of the paper mulberry, with an inner lining made of paper mulberry paper. Some damage. Upper left, red label pasted with inscription of title: Niudou xinshu 牛痘新書. Bottom right, red label pasted with inscription: 潤德堂. Center, inscriptions with fountain pen: 天德者届中卜 and 張華濱. On the inner side of the front cover a woodcut-printed smallpox vaccination certificate form is pasted, issued by a “Cowpox office”, niudouju 牛痘局. For details, see below. On the inner side of the back cover another woodcut-printed form is printed, advising recipients of a vaccination what to eat and what to avoidd. For details, see below. - Title page: Writing paper made from young bamboo. Upper left, inscription: 牛痘新書. Bottom right, two inscriptions with ink brush: 潤德堂 and 世鑫堂. Furthermore, two columns written with lead pencil: 俱于民國貳 潤德堂 / 民國貳拾柒年四月廿七日雨/張樹華字湘濱. On the back of the title page, imitating the design of woodcut printed books (albeit without lines or frames), inscription with ink brush: 光緒乙酉孟夏刊/牛痘新書 / 板存新城三清宮集仁堂. Inferior calligraphy.
