  • Beschreibung: The hot rolling operation is one of the largest energy consumers in steel production. It is especially the process with the largest electrical power demand, accounting 20% of the total electrical demand (70 - 150 kWh/ton), and one of the most critical ones in terms of power quality. The aim of this research project has been to get a better understanding of all energy flows in the hot rolling operation from the slab leaving the reheating furnace to the finished coil on the transporter table and to define and validate major opportunities for energy loss reduction. The work has been divided in five work packages: WP1: Through process energy model; WP2: Design and development of low energy and controlled production units; WP3: Intelligent production; WP4: The recovery of energy; WP5: Intelligent hot rolling for energy loss reduction and recovery. Main results have been the development of a through process energy model, the application of low pressure roll cooling and lubrication, the implementation of on/off strategies for the switching of auxiliary systems, the identification of possibilities for drive improvement, power quality control and recovery of drive energy, the validation of thermo-electric panels for heat recovery and the definition of optimum investments for energy savings.
