Beschreibung: This year's report has undergone the biggest layout change since the institute began to document its annual activities in English in the year 1971. The advances in electronic data technology have been so dramatic, the ubiquity of PCs so overwhelming, and the advantages so compelling that the decision was no longer postponed to adopt a new layout that combines the best of both worlds in the form of a booklet together with a CD-ROM. The booklet presents selected contributions in the form of concise articles and highlights prominent activities. Additionally, it contains a compilation of key data of the institute. The accompanying CD-ROM allows off-line access to all articles and gives more detailed information. Of course, wherever you are, you have access to this information via the world wide web too under the URL http://www.fz-juelich.de/ikp/de/publications.shtml. The accomplishments summarized in the Annual Report would not have been possible without the dedication of our technicians, engineers, scientists, the IKP service groups, the colleagues of the infrastructure of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the students that have advanced the scientific frontier with their diploma- and PhD-theses. The amicable and spirited collaboration with CANU and the outside users is gratefully acknowledged. This kind of environment has been a key element for our common success. We also like to express our gratitude for the advice and help we have obtained by our advisory committees and for the commitment of the board of directors for COSY. But we cannot omit to mention the dark shadows that have appeared at the very end of the year 2002. Up to this time the scientific progress was compelling and the prospects were bright with a new injector for COSY underway that would have boosted polarized ion intensities tenfold.
