  • Beschreibung: Ladies and gentlemen, three years after the first workshop on Boswellia serrata which has taken pi ace in April 1991 in Jammu we now elose the second workshop on the same topic. In this connection it is interesting to ask what was the progress in the last 3-4 years. Of course I am aware that only two groups in the world have participated in finding new insights which is the Regional Research Laboratory in Jammu and wh ich is my group at the Department of Pharmacology, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tübingen. The first workshop dealt with botany, chemistry, basic pharmacology, especially as the antiinflammatory effects of Sallai guggal are concerned. It has also been reported, that preparations from boswellia serrata are of benefit in patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis. Our group for the first time could communicate that Sallai Guggal and especially boswellic acids inhibit synthesis of leukotrienes without affecting production of prostaglandins. This inhibitory action was not due to an antioxidative effect. It was also reported which are the functions of mediators of inflammation in the inflammatory process especially the role of leukotrienes. And at that time we have speculated that boswellic acids may be of benefit in chronic inflammatory diseases which are kept alive by increased formation of leutrienes. In this connection chronic inflammatory arthritis, chronic asthma bronchitis, colitis ulcerosa, Morbus Crohn, psoriasis have been taken into consideration and in fact there was one clinical report on the beneficial action of an extract of the resin of Boswellia serrata in chronic polyarthritis. Now we have to ask for the progress. This meeting has in fact shown that there is some important progress. New derivatives of boswellic acids have been synthetized by colleagues of the Jammu Laboratory and some of them have undergone biological testing and found to be active. In this connection it is interesting to note that for the inhibitory action of boswellic acid certain ...
