<jats:p>In this work we report the use of the optothermal window combined with the molybdenum colorimetric method to study the properties of phosphate coprecipitated with hydrous ferric hydroxide (ferri-oxo) aggregates. An enhancement on the sensitivity of the present method was obtained by the use of an 875 nm laser diode. The determination of phosphorous is interesting because in natural systems, cyclic processes of iron reduction and oxidation occur in the presence of phosphate compounds. The ferri-oxo aggregates formed in these cycles can sorb available soluble phosphate at rates far larger than those expected with crystalline minerals. The availability of this “mineral phosphate input” would be advantageous for certain types of agricultural activities.</jats:p>
