AbstractFollowing a historical introduction, a known finite element model of a column is suggested, which can be generalized to plate and shell theory. A loss of stability and certain paradoxical results in computing the corresponding deflection are discussed. It is shown that static equilibrium is impossible to attain for large loads, thus contradicting “the usual” spectral theory for the linear beam or plate operators. The static and dynamic models are compared. A computational algorithm is offered for the nonlinear model of buckling.
