<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>This Review focuses on the structure‐reactivity relationship of three main classes of photolabile protecting groups (PPGs), that is, the 2‐nitrobenzyl (NB) series of PPGs, carbonyl‐based PPGs, and benzyl‐based PPGs. Recent efforts in developing new PPGs for protection of carbonyl and hydroxy groups are also discussed.</jats:p>
